THE WOODLANDS, TX - Sam Houston State University in The Woodlands is expanding its scope of programs and services to both students and area residents as enrollment numbers trend upward.

In its second full year of instruction since opening in August 2012, SHSU The Woodlands saw a nearly 12 percent increase in enrollment compared to the fall 2011 semester when the school held classes at Lone Star College-Montgomery.

The Woodlands campus offers 15 undergraduate programs, 15 graduate degrees and two doctoral programs with more on the way, said Janet Mullings, executive director of The Woodlands Center.

THE WOODLANDS, TX - Interfaith of The Woodlands has announced that its Serving Our Seniors (S.O.S.) annual day of service held on Saturday, Oct. 13 assisted 50 seniors at 60 different sites.

More than 130 volunteers spent one day serving our community seniors through various projects such as fence repair, painting and yard work.

Nonprofit social service agency Interfaith of The Woodlands provides counseling, information and referral, a food pantry, senior services, a clothes closet and more.

THE WOODLANDS, TX - The Houston Symphony will help honor philanthropist George Mitchell's contributions during a tribute 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.

Mitchell, who died Friday at age 94, was a longtime supporter of Houston arts groups. He gave $5 million to the orchestra's endowment in 1992 to make the symphony an annual presence at the pavilion, named for his wife. The contribution helps support 10 performances each summer, including classical, pops and family concerts. The Mitchells also endowed the orchestra's principal trumpet chair and contributed to other fundraising projects.

THE WOODLANDS, TX - Sixteen members of the upcoming John Cooper Middle School Drama production of "Lord of the Flies,"" to be performed February 8 and 9, prepared for their parts by attending a Saturday workshop with professional fight choreographer and stuntman Phil Aslaksen.
