The time has come for one major thoroughfare in The Woodlands Tx to get a makeover, according to one official.
More than 50,000 vehicles cross Woodlands Parkway per day, leading Alex Sutton, co-president of The Woodlands Development Company, to believe the portion of the roadway between East Panther Creek Drive and Kuykendahl Road should be expanded from four lanes to six. The five-member Woodlands Road Utility District No. 1 Board of Directors agreed, deciding last week to sell $9.5 million in bonds for the widened roadway. Sutton said the Texas Department of Transportation has been studying expanding Woodlands Parkway from Interstate 45 to Gosling Road ""for sometime.""
Eventually, the state agency probably will add a lane on each side of the road between Grogan's Mill and East Panther Creek. Woodlands Parkway from Interstate 45 to Grogan's Mill is already six lanes. It isn't the state agency's first partnership with the road utility district, which is staffed by The Woodlands Development Company. ""We've always said since the inception of The Woodlands, Woodlands Parkway needs to be six lanes,"" he said. ""That is why the right of way is as wide as it is."" Simply put, the time has come for it to go ahead and be six lanes.""
He said he doesn't believe construction will begin until summer or fall 2008. Engineers will have to draft the designs for the project, which must be approved by Precinct 3 Commissioner Ed Chance, who will maintain the right of way.
Another widening project underway is the expansion of Research Forest Drive. Chance said his office is about a year away from beginning work on the road, which will be expanded from four to six lanes.
