The wet weather didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the participants in the South Montgomery County YMCA 14th Annual YMCA Dragon Boat Team Challenge. Over 100 teams participated in the event over the course of a weekend that took place in Northshore Park and on Lake Woodlands in the Village of Panther Creek in The Woodlands.
The YMCA Dragon Boat Challenge is a unique team-building event designed to build camaraderie among corporations, civic groups, and community organizations. Activities are designed to bring individuals together to have fun.
They achieve this by becoming a team and working together as a synchronized unit in six fun team-building activities that include problem-solving and non-athletic projects, as well as some physically challenging events. But the Dragon Boat Races are the main event.
The forty-foot long dragon boats are extremely colorful, menacing-looking, dragon-headed canoes weighing over 1800 pounds that teams must row in unison across Lake Woodlands, to win the coveted title. In addition to a token award, the winning dragon boat team wins bragging rights for a year, until the dragons rear their ugly heads for next year's challenge.
