Local Girl Scout Demme Durrett is organizing the Human Rights Walk and Festival in The Woodlands for Saturday, Dec. 8.

The 15-year-old John Cooper School sophomore has been involved in the Girl Scouts for 11 years and earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award for her work in human rights education.

After the success of last year's Human Rights Walk, Durrett decided to continue her mission with another event this year. The walk is part of a larger International Walk for Human Rights event, a world-wide awareness campaign petitioning for an international Declaration of Human Rights. Durrett said she is looking to collect 2,000 signatures.

The Human Rights Walk and Festival will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. The event is free and open to the public.
