THE WOODLANDS, TX - Richard Kessio and Mary Akor aren't used to running in cold, windy conditions, but that didn't hold them back on Saturday, as they were the first man and woman, respectively, to cross the finish line at The Woodlands Marathon.
Kessio, a native Kenyan who lives and trains in Toledo, Ohio, was the first overall competitor to finish the race, as he checked in with a time of 2:26:28. Akor was the first female athlete to finish with a time of 2:41:16.
Akor, a native Nigerian who lives in La Habra, Calif., said she was happy to be in Texas for the event and that her goal all along was just to take home a victory.
Akor said that while she enjoyed the course, the weather elements and the running surface made it a bit challenging for her.
Jacob Phillips (2:33:27) of Dallas was the second man to cross the finish line, followed by Abraham Rutto (2:35:50) of Colorado Springs, Colo. The second woman to finish the race was Camille Herron (2:43:09), followed by Allie Moore (2:54:50) of Salt Lake City, Utah.
