Wellspring Community Programs, which operates weight-loss summer camps and boarding schools from Hawaii to England, is bringing its methods to The Woodlands through an after-school program at The Woodlands Recreation Center at Bear Branch Park, located at 5310 Research Forest Drive in The Woodlands.
""We don't believe there are magic bullets when it comes to weight loss,"" Wellspring Managing Director Lev Kaye said. ""Weight loss is a complex problem and it needs a comprehensive solution.""
Between 20 and 25 million children are medically classified as overweight or obese, Kaye said. ""This is the first generation of kids who are not going to live as long as their parents,"" Kaye said. ""It is definitely an epidemic.""
Youths aged 11-18 who sign up for The Woodlands program will participate in nutrition classes and physical activity, as well as outings to restaurants and grocery stores to learn how to read menus, food preparation and read labels to make better choices, Kaye said. Students will meet twice a week after school for up to five hours a week and then once a month on a Saturday morning. ""It's 100 percent about lifestyle,"" he said. ""It's not a diet.""
Pediatrician Dr. James Herrin, who has been practicing in Conroe for 23 years, fully supports Wellspring. ""We have a humongous need in our area,"" Herrin said. ""Houston is one of the top five fattest cities, and that includes The Woodlands.""
Wellspring is still determining costs for The Woodlands program, Kaye said. To learn more about Wellspring or to apply for The Woodlands program, call 866-364-0804 or visit www.wellspringprograms.com " Posted by Tamborrel Bulox Team on
