New Woodlands Fire Stations Coming to Indian Springs and Creekside Park

The Woodlands Fire Department in The Woodlands, Tx is scheduled to hold an open forum on Wednesday, January 13 to discuss two new fire stations for Creekside Park and Indian Springs.

Including their design, location, statement of need and the process to determine sites, the public forum will include presentations on the new fire stations. Residents can ask questions and make comments on the new fire stations following the presentation.

"This is the first bond project, and we think it is a significant project to provide quality services that the citizens expect. It's significant in terms of costs. We want to inform and education the citizens to the best of our ability on what we are doing," stated Fire Chief Alan Benson.

The Woodlands plans to build the two fire stations simultaneously, although the Creekside Park station is expected to open in the spring of 2011, while the Indian Springs facility will not open until late 2011 or early 2012, in an effort to save money. The reason for the delay is because while Creekside Park has firefighters at its temporary facility in the village, Indian Springs requires new staff.

Located in Creekside Park in the median of a planned expansion of Kuykendahl, Road Fire Station 7 is set to be done with a Craftsman theme, while Fire Station 8 in Panther Creek will be constructed in a Mediterranean style.

Adjacent to Spring Creek, about a quarter-mile from Flintridge Drive, Fire Station 8 is tentatively planned on the east side Gosling Road. Benson stated the site is undergoing environmental review.

The Woodlands community may be eligible for better insurance ratings, which will decrease premiums for homeowners and businesses, by strategically added two new fire stations.

For the stations, The Woodlands Fire Department Board approved architectural rendering and hopes to take the projects to bid in May or June. By Thursday, July 1, construction is expected to begin.

The Woodlands Interfaith Sweethearts Give Holiday Cheer

A musical performance group sponsored by Interfaith of The Woodlands, Tx, The Sweethearts, has provided holiday cheer for South Montgomery County's long term care residents.

The "all senior" performance group visited several long-term care facilities performing for the residents and sharing the holiday spirit, throughout the month of December.

"The Sweethearts performed at eleven retirement communities and long term care facilities this holiday season. We were so thrilled to perform for the community and spread holiday cheer to the seniors," stated Dorothy Meredith, retired teacher and group leader.

"The holidays can be a lonely time for long term care residents, and we are happy to provide holiday visits and let the residents know they are not forgotten. We received so much more through these visits than we gave. It is such a pleasure to know we are able to make a difference," according to Debbie Repka, Interfaith of The Woodlands Senior Services Director.

The Woodlands Sweethearts are a group of 20 senior adults who enjoy performing and offering the gift of music. On Monday, January 11, 2010, rehearsals for the spring season begin.

The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival Slated for April 2010

On Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11, 2010. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival in The Woodlands, Tx is set to hold its fifth annual event.

Featuring 200 national and regional artists in 14 mediums selling their original creations, the festival is a juried fine art show. Festival hours are 10 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For adults, admission is $10, while children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. $15 is the price for two-day tickets.

The Woodlands Development Company Gives Donation To Texas Childrens Cancer Center

Recently, The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC) in The Woodlands, Tx presented a $1,720 check to Texas Children's Cancer Center.

On Saturday, November 14, the company donated the proceeds from concession sales at the May Valley Turkey Trot, a special event held in The Woodlands' Village of Sterling Ridge.

The Turkey Trot celebrated the opening of the new May Valley Park, which included a tour of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) Benefit Home (top photograph) in May Valley.

Susan Vreeland-Wendt, TWDC's director of marketing stated, "The Turkey Trot was a fun, family-oriented event with a Thanksgiving theme. In the spirit of giving thanks, we chose to donate the proceeds from the food sales to Texas Children's Cancer Center, one of the 2009 GHBA Benefit Home Charities."

The Woodlands Gets a New Grogans Mill Dog Park

Starting this week with the removal of some underbrush, a new dog park will be constructed in Tamarac Park in the beautiful Grogan's Mill subdivision in The Woodlands, Tx.

The park is set to be fenced, have a water station, and have benches. The park will be the size of the Harpers Landing dog park, about 22,000 square feet.

H1N1 Clinic Held at Lone Star College-Montgomery

From Monday, December 14 - Friday, December 18, the University of Texas Medical Branch Montgomery County Health Department has announced that they will be dispensing free H1N1 flu shots to the public at Lone-Star College-Montgomery in The Woodlands, Tx.

The vaccinations are scheduled to be available in Building D (Art Gallery) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, December 14, through Thursday, December 17, and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18.

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands $104 Million Expansion Project Raises Level of Care

Early next year, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital in The Woodlands, Tx, which has been serving The Woodlands and nearby communities for nearly 25 years, will break ground on a new, seven-story patient tower. $104 million is roughly the cost of the project.

Including pre-operation and recovery rooms, waiting areas and sterile processing, phase one of the 240,000-square-foot expansion will add eight state-of-the-art surgical suites and surgical support services. A patient care unit with 36 beds and a parking garage will be added additionally. 288 will be the total bed count for the hospital.

"Since 1991, we have invested more than $180 million to respond to the growth and needs of this dynamic market. The greater Montgomery County area is one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S. and it is our responsibility to continue to respond to that growth not only with facilities like the new patient tower, but also technology and a higher level of services," stated Steve Sanders, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital Chief Executive Officer.

In the past decade, this is the third major expansion project undertaken by Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. The hospital completed a six-story patient tower in 2003 , and a third medical office building was opened on campus in 2005. Memorial Hermann The Woodlands continues to expand its services and medical specialties on campus and beyond, in addition to facility expansion projects.

Recently, the hospital opened a new community 24-Hour Emergency Services on Woodlands Parkway and has established an ongoing relationship with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children's Memorial Hermann, the University of Texas Health Science Center and Mischer Neuroscience Institute.

White Christmas Presented by The Woodlands Repertory Theatre

Based on the timeless, beloved, heartwarming musical adaptation, White Christmas, includes seventeen Irving Berlin songs. After World War II, veterans Phil Davis and Bob Wallace have a successful song-and-dance act.

Local Writing Tutor to Host Book Signing at The Woodlands Barnes & Noble

Through the recent release of her third book, Babes With a Beatitude - Devotions for Smart, Savvy Women of Faith (Howard/Simon & Schuster, 2009), which hit book store shelves on Tuesday, December 1, Linda Kozar, one of Lone Star College-Montgomery's very own writing tutors, is celebrating a professional and personal writing milestone. On Saturday, December 12, Kozar and co-author, Dannelle Woody, are scheduled to be at Barnes & Noble in The Woodlands Mall in The Woodlands, Tx, at 2:00 p.m., signing copies of the book.

She has also published two mystery books, as an accomplished author. Kozar is able to bring her writing expertise to the students at LSC-Montgomery. Along with other writing tutors in the college's writing center The Write Place at LSC-Montgomery, she provides individual assistance with rough drafts, brainstorming, and revisions on any writing assignment. Babes With a Beatitude is filled with daily devotions created by Kozar and Woody from real-life experiences and testimonies through their years of ministry and church leadership, according to Kozar.

"Most of us women are busy, bustling around at breakneck speed, trying to be the best wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, employee, and volunteer. We try to juggle career, children, church, and everything in between, yet struggle with our inability to be all things to all people. We hope that through this book, women will be inspired, touched, and filled with hope and renewed faith," stated Kozar.

Also, Kozar is the facilitator for The Global Pen, LSC-Montgomery's student publication for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The student's weekly meetings are run in the same fashion as a professional writing group, where the group provides feedback on each other's work, according to her.

"I've led and been a member of writing groups since 2003, and I've learned a lot about creative writing. I've experienced the art and hard work that goes into crafting an article, short story or manuscript. At the college, I am able to share what I've learned with the students and hopefully enable them to meet their personal and professional writing goals. Hopefully, some students may even wish to pursue careers in journalism or writing," stated Kozar.

1st Annual Woodlands Winter Festival, Chili Cook-Off Coming To Creekside Park

This Sunday, December 6, the Creekside Park Village Association in The Woodlands, Tx is hosting the 1st Annual Winter Festival and Chili Cook-Off.

The Woodlands Car Club Showcases Vintage Models at Market Street

On Sunday, December 6, members of The Woodlands Car Club in The Woodlands, Tx will present their collection of vintage cars, from classic convertibles to hot roadsters, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Market Street - The Woodlands as part of the group's monthly Coffee & Cars for a Cause series. The event is open to the public, with free admission.

The club will collect contributions for Market Street's 2009 non-profit Change for Charity partners, while showcasing its collection of classic cars from years past.
