Economic outlook

U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, said he will reveal the results of his recent health care surveys at the South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce's upcoming Economic Outlook Conference.Brady said the surveys polled 50,000 households on how U.S. health care can be improved. In addition, about 600 people took online polls. Brady will give the opening remarks at the conference at 8 a.m. Feb. 29 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott, located at 1601 Lake Robbins Drive.

He plans to talk about what he heard during all of the town hall meetings and tours of medical facilities he did to research health care issues, he said. He will also discuss what he will turn into legislation for Congress to consider. "It became clear that you can't regulate the efficiency and quality of health care from Washington," he said. "That has to be done locally, and our biggest challenge is to turn America's sick-care system into a real health care system."

Brady said his potential legislation will focus on preventative health care, making health care more affordable and accessible and improving its quality. Kay Hohman, vice president of communications, legislative and economic outlook for the chamber, said the keynote speaker will be U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. "We were just thrilled that we were able to ask him to speak," she said.Hohman said the chamber expects about 500 people will attend the conference, 50 more than last year.

Hohman said the conference provides a great economic outlook for the community that isn't available anywhere else, and it's also the largest area business event of the year. "It's a great overview from the national level to the local level," she said.Hohman said the conference will take an optimistic tone amid the recent national economic downturn. Reservations cost $75 for members or $85 for non-members before Feb. 22 and $85 for members or $95 for non-members after that date. For more information or reservations, call 281-367-5777.
